Kids Korner: Greatest Commandment (October 25th)

Read Matthew 22:34-46 with your family.

Have you ever wondered what the most important rule in the whole world might be? Is it being honest? Sharing your toys? Listening to your parents? Being kind to someone who’s having a bad day? One day, someone asked Jesus a question just like that. There were hundreds of religious rules, and they wanted to know which one mattered most.

Jesus gave them an answer that was surprisingly simple: Love God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. Then he added something just as important: Love your neighbour as yourself. Jesus said these two commandments were the foundation for everything else. All those rules about how people should live? They’re supposed to help us love God and love one another.

But here’s something interesting. Jesus didn’t say to love only the people who are nice to you, or the friends you already have. Your neighbour might be the new kid at school, someone who speaks a different language, or someone who gets left out at recess. And did you notice that Jesus said to love your neighbour as yourself? That means you matter, too! Being kind to yourself is part of learning how to be kind to others.

Here’s your challenge this week: Look for one person who could use a little extra kindness. Maybe invite someone to play, help without being asked, or listen when someone needs to talk. It doesn’t have to be anything big. Sometimes the smallest acts of love make the biggest difference. And that’s a pretty wonderful way to follow Jesus.
