For Exploring Christianity

Everyone starts somewhere.

Whether you’re curious about Christianity, returning after many years away, or simply have questions you’ve never had a chance to ask, you’re welcome here.

Jesus was a man who lived over 2000 years ago. There are books that date back to that time that talk about his existence and his influence.

What he looked like, how he spoke, what he did in his downtime. We can’t know any of that.

What we do have is a body of work known at the Gospels that tells us about what he taught and how he wanted us to treat each other.

.

That depends on what you mean by “trust”. If you are expecting the Bible to be a written form of a documentary on like between 2000 – 3000 years ago, I’m afraid you will be disappointed.

The Bible is a library of books, letters, songs, and arguments written by people a lot time ago, in a world trying to understand how they related to God. It speaks of their worry, their arrogance, their mistakes, their hopes, and their joys.

And in the midst of all of that, it teaches us how to treat each other, treat strangers, build bridges instead of walls, and generally how to make life better for everyone.

Funny thing about violence in the Bible – almost all of the references are found in the Book of Psalms.

Psalms is a collection of worship songs and prayers. The majority of it was written while the Hebrew people were struggling under invaders and occupation. Communities were exiled from their lands in Israel and Judea. And they cried out for God to help.

There is a principle in psychology that talks about when a people feel helpless, they will often redirect their sense of hopelessness to an outside force – often God, but in modern times a superhero – asking that that being get justice on their behalf.

The Hebrew people did not have the political power or war capabilities to act out the violence they talked about, they gave that all over to God.
