Kids Korner: Pentecost (May 24th)

Read Acts 2:1-21 with your family.

When the day of Pentecost came, Jesus’ friends were all together in one place. They were probably nervous and unsure about what came next. Jesus had gone back to heaven, and now they had to figure out how to be his people in the world. Then suddenly, there was a sound like a rushing wind, and little flames like fire appeared over their heads. God’s Holy Spirit had come to be with them in a brand-new way.

Something amazing happened next. The disciples began speaking in many different languages, and people from all over the world could understand them. Imagine hearing someone from far away suddenly speaking your own language perfectly! It was a sign that God’s love was not only for one group of people. The church was beginning, and it was going to be big enough for everyone.

Some people thought the disciples were acting silly or strange, but Peter stood up and explained that this was joy, courage, and God’s Spirit at work. The Holy Spirit helped ordinary people become brave enough to speak, share, welcome others, and build community together. They were no longer hiding in fear. They were becoming the church.

Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit still moves today. Sometimes it feels like courage when we are scared. Sometimes it feels like kindness that helps someone feel welcome. Sometimes it feels like joy bubbling up inside us for no reason at all. God’s Spirit helps people come together, care for one another, and make room for everyone at the table.
