Read Matthew 18:15-20 with your family.

Jesus knew that people who care about each other will still hurt each other sometimes. Friends argue. Families get angry. People say things they should not say, or do things that are unfair. Jesus does not tell his followers to pretend nothing happened. Instead, he gives them a way to deal with problems honestly and carefully.

Jesus says that if someone has hurt you, begin by talking to that person privately. That gives both people a chance to listen, explain, apologize, and make things right without turning the problem into everybody else’s business. If the problem cannot be solved that way, Jesus says to bring one or two trustworthy people to help. The goal is not to choose sides or embarrass anyone. The goal is to help people hear each other and find a way forward.

Sometimes, though, a problem is too serious to solve between just two people. Jesus tells the whole community to take responsibility when that happens. A community has to think about what is fair, what keeps people safe, and what kind of behaviour it will accept. Forgiveness matters, but so do truth and responsibility. Being part of a community means that what we do affects other people.

Then Jesus makes an extraordinary promise: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” Jesus is not only with us when everyone is happy and getting along. Jesus is also present when we do the difficult work of listening, telling the truth, repairing what has been hurt, and trying again. That is part of learning how to live together as the people of God.
