Proper 13
Proper 13? What a strange name for the Sunday.
The green weeks after Pentecost are called “Proper”. We will count them up to week 28 this year, before we get ready to start Advent and our new Christian Year with the first purple block at the top.
During the Proper weeks, we spend time getting to know Jesus better, understanding what he taught us to do, and remembering our responsibility as Christians.

Showing compassion
The dictionary says compassion means “concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others”.
In our story today Jesus showed compassion for all the people who had followed him and wanted his help. He pushed the disciples to show compassion when it was dinnertime and all of the people were hungry.
There are many ways to show compassion. What are some of the things you do to show compassion? What are some other things you could do? Try to show compassion for others every day this week. I bet you will feel better when you do, because compassion for others always makes us feel closer to God.

Gift of food
One of the best ways to show compassion is through food. Everyone has to eat and getting a gift of cookies or brownies will often make a sad person feel better.
Ask the grown-ups in your life who they know that is struggling with health or loneliness or perhaps with money and bills. Talk about what would be a nice gift of food. Do they like chocolate? Are they allergic to peanuts or gluten?
Then make a sweet treat for this person. Write a note tell them that you are thinking about them and praying that God makes them feel better. Afterward deliver your gift.
