Kids Korner: Jesus visits a synagogue (January 31st)

4th Sunday After Epiphany

Epiphany is the season after Christmas (the first set of green blocks), and separates the Advent/Christmas season from Lent/Easter. In Epiphany we learn about the beginnings of Jesus ministry and the calling of the disciples.

Our Story

Activity

In today’s story everyone was amazed by Jesus’ teachings about God. What do you think Jesus was telling them?

Have a conversation with your family talking about what Jesus might have told them. Remember they didn’t have the Gospels back then when Jesus first started teaching, so anything Jesus told them about God and about loving each other like family was a new idea.

Activity

In today’s story Jesus visits a synagogue. What is a synagogue? Have you ever visited a synagogue?

A synagogue is a large building where Jewish folks go to worship, study their faith and hold community gatherings. In Jesus’ day a synagogue was also where someone might find a lawyer or community worker to help them with a problem.

Here is a video of a modern synagogue. How is it the same as a church? How is it different?

See the scrolls? Jesus would have read from something that looked a lot like that when he visited and taught in synagogues.
