The Barefoot Evangelist

Read Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52 with your family.

Jesus loved to tell stories about ordinary things. Seeds. Bread. Treasure. Pearls. Fishing nets. Everyone listening knew what those things were like, so they could imagine the story in their minds. Then Jesus would surprise them by saying, “God’s kingdom is like that.”

Sometimes God’s kingdom begins with something very small, like a tiny mustard seed or a little bit of yeast mixed into dough. At first it doesn’t seem very important. But over time it grows, spreads, and changes everything around it. Small acts of kindness, courage, and love can make a much bigger difference than we first expect.

Jesus also said God’s kingdom is like finding a hidden treasure or a beautiful pearl that is worth more than anything else. When people discover something truly wonderful, they are willing to let go of other things so they can hold on to what matters most. Following God’s way isn’t about collecting the most things – it’s about recognizing what is truly valuable.

Finally, Jesus reminded his friends that fishermen sort their catch and that wise people keep both old and new treasures. As we learn about God, we don’t have to throw away everything we already know. Instead, we keep learning, asking questions, and discovering new treasures that help us understand God’s love even better.
