Read Matthew 14:22-33 with your family.
Sometimes life feels like a storm. Maybe you have a fight with a friend, you’re nervous about starting something new, or something at home is difficult. Peter discovered that when he kept looking at Jesus, he found the courage to do something amazing. But when he paid attention only to the wind and the waves, he became afraid.
We all get distracted by the storms around us. Worries, fears, and problems can seem much bigger than they really are. Jesus doesn’t expect us to be brave all by ourselves. He reminds us that we are not alone, even when things feel scary.
Peter sank because he was afraid, but Jesus didn’t get angry with him or leave him in the water. Jesus reached out his hand and helped him. That means that when we make mistakes, feel worried, or lose confidence, God is still there to help us get back on our feet.
This story teaches us that courage doesn’t mean never being afraid. Courage means trusting that God is with us, even when the wind is strong and the waves are high.
