Read Matthew 15:10-28 with your family.

Jesus was teaching people that what makes someone good or bad isn’t what they eat or whether they follow all the right rules. What matters is what comes out of us – our words, our choices, and how we treat other people. Being kind, fair, and loving matters much more than looking like we have everything right.

Then Jesus travelled to a place where most of the people weren’t Jewish. A woman who lived there came to him because her daughter needed help. At first, Jesus told her that his work was for the people of Israel. He even used words that weren’t very kind. But the woman didn’t go away. She challenged Jesus. She knew that she and her daughter mattered too.

And Jesus listened to her. He changed his response and helped her daughter. That’s pretty amazing! Jesus showed us that listening to someone else – especially someone who has been left out – can help us see something we didn’t see before. Changing our minds when we learn something new isn’t a weakness. It can be part of growing wiser.

Sometimes people are told they don’t belong because of where they come from, what they look like, how they speak, what they believe, or who their family is. This story asks us to notice those people and listen. God’s community has room for people others might leave out. And sometimes the person we need to learn from is the person everyone else has been ignoring.
