Kids Korner: The Good Shepherd (April 25th)

4th Sunday in Easter

Easter is not one day, it is an entire seven week season. During Easter we hear the stories of how Jesus appeared to his friends after his Resurrection. The last week in Easter is when we celebrate Jesus’ Ascension into heaven.

Our Story

Activity

Read John 10:11-18 together. Learn about sheep and shepherds. They were a normal part of every village when Jesus was alive, but today sheep are hard to find and even harder to learn about if you are not close to a farm. Do an internet search about shepherding in Israel and Palestine. The way shepherds took care of their sheep in Jesus’ time is still the way most of today’s shepherds take care of their sheep in that region.

The shepherd in Jesus’ day would walk ahead of the sheep and whistle or call to them to follow. Every sheep had a name. At night they slept outside on the hill, and the shepherd protected them from wolves and thieves. This is how Jesus used the metaphor of sheep and shepherd to know us and protect us.

Activity

Make a sheep. There are a lot of ways to do it so use your imagination.

  • draw a pictures of a sheep and colour it
  • draw an outline of a sheep, put glue on the body and use cotton balls or lint from the dryer to make your sheep fuzzy
  • cut a toilet paper roll into two parts, one part 2/3 of the roll and the other 1/3. Cover the 2/3 part with glue then past cotton balls or lint from the dryer all over. You can draw eyes on the 1/3 part and tape it to the body. Toothpicks can be used for legs, or if you are really crafty you can use something else
  • use your imagination and come up with something else
