Road to Emmaus – When the Journey Feels Backwards

The two disciples walking to Emmaus thought the story was over. Their hopes dashed, their hearts heavy—they didn’t recognize that the very presence of hope was walking beside them. Sometimes in life, our journeys feel backward. We expect resolution, clarity, or progress, but all we see are long roads of confusion or frustration. And yet, these roads are where transformation often waits.

It is in the simple moments—a shared meal, a quiet conversation, a walk—that the extraordinary can reveal itself. The disciples didn’t recognize Jesus until he broke bread with them. Similarly, in our modern lives, meaning often appears in ordinary moments, in places we’re too distracted to notice. Sometimes we have to slow down and open our eyes to recognize the hope that’s already there.

Life doesn’t always deliver insight in the way we expect. We may long for dramatic signs or sudden clarity, but often it’s in small, deliberate acts—pausing, listening, engaging with the present—that we are guided forward. The journey itself, even when it seems backward, is fertile ground for revelation.

This week, pay attention to the moments that feel ordinary or frustrating. Notice the subtle signals, the unexpected kindnesses, the quiet opportunities to reconnect with hope. Sometimes the road is longer than we want, but the presence along the way may be exactly what we need.
